A trajectory that illustrates Madrid’s appeal for international players in the energy transition.
Founded in 1898 in Essen under the name Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk, RWE is today one of the world’s largest energy groups, present in more than 15 countries across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. Long a specialist in coal and nuclear power, the group has refocused since 2018 on renewables, storage and energy trading, with a target of 50 GW of global renewable capacity by 2030. Spain is one of the priority markets in this growth plan.
Fifteen years building an Iberian presence
RWE entered the Spanish market as early as 2009, through its subsidiary RWE Innogy, by taking a stake in a Spanish wind farm operator. Since then, the group has steadily expanded its portfolio. Today, RWE Renewables Iberia operates more than 750 MW of installed capacity in Spain: onshore wind, solar photovoltaic and hydroelectric plants. Seventeen wind farms have been built or are currently under construction across the country. On the solar side, two plants are operational in the province of Guadalajara, near Madrid: Casa Valdes (44 MW) and Puerta del Sol (44 MW), both commissioned in 2024. On the commercial front, a PPA covering 459 MW of the Spanish wind and hydroelectric portfolio has been signed with Alpiq, securing the sale of output on the Iberian electricity market.
Madrid Region, operational hub of the Iberian subsidiary
In February 2022, RWE relocated its Iberian headquarters to Madrid. The subsidiary RWE Renewables Iberia S.A.U. moved into the 18th floor of Torre Alfredo Mahou, Plaza Manuel Gómez Moreno 2, in the heart of Azca — the capital’s central business district. The office, designed to accommodate around fifty staff, was fitted out in line with the group’s stated values: certified materials and a circular economy approach. The rationale for choosing Madrid is straightforward: the capital’s central position provides easy access to the 17 production sites spread across the country, while concentrating the institutional, financial and industrial contacts RWE works with on a daily basis.
A market in full acceleration
Spain is today one of Europe’s most dynamic markets for renewables: more than 60% of national electricity generated from renewable sources in 2024, and a target of 74% set by the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) for 2030. Against this backdrop, RWE continues to invest.
