Investment in Madrid reaches a new all-time record in terms of stock

Madrid concentrates two out of every three euros of foreign investment in Spain and one out of every three jobs

According to the latest data from the Foreign Investment Register, published in May, regarding foreign investment stock, the Community of Madrid, following a slight increase in 2024 (+1.1%), has once again reached a new record high in the series, with €420.589 billion, considering productive investments only.

Our region has experienced continuous growth since 2013, and these figures are 166% higher than the levels recorded in 2007, the first year for which the Register provides data.

Madrid continues to lead foreign investment attraction among Spain’s regions. It concentrates 66% of the national total, three percentage points more than in 2007, placing it well ahead of Catalonia (13.5%), the Basque Country (5.0%), Asturias (3.4%) and the Valencian Community (2.7%), the regions immediately following in terms of investment volume.

 

 

The United States (18.3%), the United Kingdom (12.3%), France (11.5%), Italy (9.5%) and Germany (7.5%) are the leading investors in Madrid in terms of foreign investment stock.

Over the last year, significant increases in investment stock were recorded from China (+€1.968 billion), Argentina (+€1.545 billion), France (+€1.476 billion), Mexico (+€1.445 billion) and Sweden (+€974 million).

Tangible fixed assets, which provide a complementary perspective on where investment is effectively taking place and on the evolution of foreign companies’ fixed assets in Madrid, corrected in 2024 the strong increase recorded the previous year. It reached €39.591 billion, representing 25.6% of the national total.

The United States (22.7%), Germany (21.7%), France (19.4%) and the United Kingdom (7.5%) stand out among the countries with the highest volume of tangible fixed assets held in the region.

Madrid has also led the recovery in employment levels linked to foreign investment in Spain over the last decade.

At the end of 2024 — the latest year for which the Register provides foreign investment stock data — there were 693,815 jobs linked to foreign investment in the Community of Madrid, 1.2% fewer than the previous year.

Despite this slight correction compared with the previous year (-1.2%), employment growth has been continuous from 2014 through 2023, and the employment figures in Madrid in the latest year are 77% higher than those recorded in 2007. They represent 19.8% of total employment in the region.

Since 2019, almost 170,000 additional jobs linked to FDI have been created in the Community of Madrid.

Madrid is the region with the highest concentration of foreign investment-related employment in Spain (33.0% of the national total), ahead of Catalonia (19.4%), Andalusia (9.7%) and the Valencian Community (6.6%).

Companies from France (162,333 jobs), the United States (141,451), the United Kingdom (73,289), Germany (60,602) and Mexico (32,238) are those maintaining the highest levels of employment in Madrid.

The sectors with the highest employment levels in the region are retail trade (11.8%), computer programming, consultancy and related activities (9.0%), wholesale trade (8.2%), food and beverage service activities (7.0%) and administrative activities (4.0%).
