Madrid region has become a powerhouse in the audiovisual industry, attracting leading global companies and paving the way for continued growth. As home to 35% of Spain’s audiovisual production companies, the city offers a thriving creative ecosystem.
Coupled with world-class infrastructure, this dynamic industry makes Madrid an increasingly strategic destination for U.S. companies seeking to expand their presence in Europe. The region boasts more than 30 high-capacity studios and soundstages, with standout facilities like Madrid Content City, one of Europe’s largest audiovisual complexes, featuring 40 post-production rooms and a cutting-edge visual effects (VFX) studio.
Additionally, a new 30,000-square-meter production hub in Villaverde, housing five independent production centers featuring stages ranging from 2,500 square meters to 1,200 square meters, is scheduled for completion in Q3 2025. American companies have played a key role in the growth of Madrid’s audiovisual
industry over the years, contributing to its expansion and global recognition as a major production hub.
In television and film production, Warner Bros. International Television Production Spain & Portugal has played a pivotal role for nearly two decades, adapting and
producing a wide range of content, from scripted series to entertainment formats from his Madrid HQ. Netflix, a pioneer in streaming entertainment, arrived in Spain ten years ago and chose Madrid for its first European Production Hub in 2018. Since then, it serves as a creative epicenter for Spanish-language original content, producing worldwide hits like Money Heist, and strengthening Madrid’s position in global audiovisual production.
In the animated film industry, Spain ranks fifth worldwide, with Madrid hosting 31% of the country’s animation and visual effects companies. Seeing the city’s potential, U.S.- based Skydance Media acquired Madrid-based Ilion Studios five years ago, further solidifying Madrid’s position as a top destination for investment and innovation in animation.
Beyond U.S. investments, companies from around the world are capitalizing on Madrid’s creative ecosystem. India-based Digitoonz Media & Entertainment, which also has an office in Los Angeles, recently opened its first European headquarters in Madrid. Meanwhile, London-based DAZN launched an innovative sports production hub in the heart of Madrid last year, reshaping the audiovisual sports industry by transforming office space into a state-of-the-art broadcast and media management center. Mexico’s EFD Studios recently announced that will build Europe’s largest virtual production studio in Boadilla del Monte.
As we can see, Madrid has become the epicenter of the European audiovisual industry, with U.S. companies playing a key role in its growth. With top-tier infrastructure and talent, Madrid remains a prime destination for audiovisual innovation in Europe.
