Pablo de la Torre (Santander): “Everything related to technology and artificial intelligence must be considered a priority”

Jablo de la Torre is the Head of International Business at Santander, a global financial institution whose corporate headquarters are located in Boadilla del Monte, in the heart of the Madrid Region.

The bank plays a vital role in the region’s economic development: on the one hand, by attracting talent and investment; on the other, through specialised teams that advise entrepreneurs seeking to establish their operations in Madrid.

This position gives the bank a valuable perspective on the sectors in which the region has the greatest potential. In this interview, Jaime notes that “in addition to being Spain’s economic centre, Madrid is positioning itself as a European hub for technological innovation.”

Santander is one of Europe’s most internationally active banks and a key financial institution globally. For those less familiar with its role in Madrid, how would you describe the bank’s presence in the region and its contribution to the local economy?

Our presence in Madrid is highly significant. As a global bank headquartered in the Madrid Region, the region is strategically important for us and hosts a substantial share of our teams and operations.

How is Madrid currently perceived abroad as a financial and corporate hub? What do international investors value most?

Madrid’s international image continues to improve. As Spain’s capital, it benefits from a strong institutional position alongside a well-developed business and financial ecosystem and access to highly qualified human capital.

International investors particularly value:

  • Strategic location, at the centre of Spain, a large market that serves as a bridge between Europe and Latin America and, at the same time, as a gateway from Europe to Africa.
  • Infrastructure, with a strong endowment in areas such as healthcare, logistics, telecommunications, and passenger and freight transport. The region is well connected with both Europe and the Americas.
  • Innovation environment, as Madrid is not only Spain’s economic centre but is also positioning itself as a European hub for technological innovation, attracting entrepreneurs.
  • Human capital, supported by some of Spain’s most important universities and by Madrid’s ability to attract highly capable professionals from across the country and abroad, with a very competitive balance between talent and cost.
  • Quality of life, as an open and welcoming region that makes daily life easier, with a strong cultural and leisure offering and an environment in which families can adapt easily.

How has this image evolved in recent years?

Madrid’s reputation has improved steadily, consolidating its position as a dynamic, business-friendly region that has retained its character and openness.

In an increasingly competitive landscape of global hubs, what sets Madrid apart from other financial and technology centres?

Competition is constant and requires continuous improvement. That said, Madrid’s combination of location, infrastructure, innovation capacity, and human capital remains a highly distinctive and difficult-to-match advantage.

Madrid has emerged as a fast-growing financial and technology hub. How would you assess the maturity of this ecosystem, and how should it evolve going forward?

The current momentum is very encouraging, but continued progress is essential. This means investing in skills aligned with new technologies, ensuring education systems remain flexible and market-oriented, and continuing to strengthen infrastructure—particularly in terms of energy capacity.

Santander has a strong footprint in the region, from its Financial City in Boadilla del Monte to specialised units in central Madrid. How does this presence support the attraction of foreign investment?

Our extensive local presence allows us to offer integrated support to companies choosing Madrid, providing easy access to specialised advice and financing and covering both financial and non-financial needs.

Once international companies are established in Madrid, how does Santander support their growth?

We offer a broad range of products and highly specialised teams capable of addressing virtually any financial requirement. In particular, our multinational team focuses on ensuring a smooth entry and ongoing support for companies entering the Spanish market.

What are foreign investors primarily looking for when they arrive in Madrid?

Madrid captures a significant share of investment into Spain. Real estate, telecommunications, and energy remain the main recipient sectors.

Which sectors do you see as strategic for Madrid in the coming years?

Technology and artificial intelligence should clearly be priorities. Ensuring investors have the right conditions to develop these activities will be key.

From a financial sector perspective, what public policies could further enhance foreign investment?

Streamlining administrative procedures and reducing bureaucracy would have a meaningful impact on investment attraction.

Santander sponsored the Madrid Investment Forum in 2025. How do you assess its impact?

This was our second year supporting the Forum. It is an excellent platform to showcase Madrid internationally, and we look forward to continuing our involvement in future editions.
