The Madrid Region leads Spain’s ranking of technology companies, with a total of 2,607 firms, consolidating its position as one of Europe’s leading entrepreneurial hubs. This is highlighted in the 2026 Regional Report on Tech and Innovative Companies, prepared by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, with the participation of the madri+d Knowledge Foundation, part of the Regional Ministry of Education, Science and Universities, through its Startup Radar madri+d platform.
According to this analysis, Madrid’s innovative business ecosystem has grown significantly over the past year, with the number of technology companies increasing by 19.1%. Employment in the sector rose by 21.9%, reaching 44,276 jobs, while combined revenues surged by 38.7%, rising from €5.238 billion to nearly €7.270 billion.
Another key indicator is the investment attracted by these companies. During the same period, startups and technology companies in the region secured more than €1.17 billion in funding, representing 36.5% of the total investment raised across Spain. Madrid thus confirms its position as the country’s leading financial centre and a major destination for entrepreneurial capital.
The report also highlights increased business maturity among Madrid-based companies. Although startups continue to represent the largest share of the ecosystem, scaleups (high-growth emerging companies) are becoming the sector’s main economic driver. The 193 scaleups identified generate more than 8,600 jobs and collectively exceed €2.056 billion in revenue, with an average of 44 employees and more than €10.6 million in revenue per company.
By sector, banking leads Madrid’s ecosystem with 176 companies and more than €1.21 billion in revenue. It is followed by verticals such as SaaS (Software as a Service), Energy, Marketing & Media, eHealth (Healthcare) and EdTech (Education). Artificial Intelligence continues to gain prominence, with 132 active companies in the region, establishing itself as one of the fastest-growing areas.
