This strategic decision marks the group’s entry into the Spanish market and highlights the growing role of the Madrid region as a strategic anchor for players in reinsurance, risk management, and specialized services.
The German group Munich Re, one of the world leaders in reinsurance, is strengthening its presence in Europe by choosing the Madrid region to support its growth across the Iberian Peninsula and Southern Europe. In October 2024, its branch dedicated to specialty lines (liability, industrial, energy, technical risks, cybersecurity, etc.), Munich Re Specialty, officially launched operations in the Spanish capital through a local branch.
This establishment is part of the Group’s targeted expansion strategy. Spain has become a new strategic market in which the group aims to offer its specialized insurance solutions, supported by an experienced local team. The appointment of Gianluca Piscopo as Country Manager in September 2024, followed by that of Miguel Peces as Head of Underwriting, reflects the company’s commitment to building a solid operational presence from the outset. Already active, the Madrid office is continuing to recruit a multidisciplinary team capable of addressing the specific challenges of the local market.
Operational anchoring in Madrid to support a regional strategy
Munich Re Specialty’s choice of Madrid reflects a desire for proximity to Southern European markets. By creating a local structure and appointing a dedicated Country Manager, the group is demonstrating its intent to operate directly in the Spanish market with established operational capacity.
The opening of the Madrid office also strengthens Munich Re’s presence in a region where the insurance sector is experiencing steady growth, driven by the digitalization of services and the diversification of risks. This positioning enables the group to tailor its response to local needs while leveraging a well-regarded professional environment—particularly in terms of regulation, compliance, and risk governance.
Risk management, finance, and insurance innovation…
More than just a commercial showcase, this move marks a new phase in the development of Munich Re Specialty in Southwestern Europe. By choosing Madrid, the group has secured a strategic foothold to serve the Spanish market as part of its targeted geographic expansion strategy, while also facilitating connections to neighboring markets across the region.
With this new opening, Munich Re Specialty joins a growing wave of international players setting up in Madrid attracted by the region’s pro-business environment, quality infrastructure, and strong pool of multilingual talent. The region is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for high value-added functions, especially in risk management, financial services, and insurance innovation.
