The new system will connect Santander to Florida, with intermediate stops in the Azores and Bermuda, making it the only direct link between Europe and the U.S. East Coast. Developed in partnership with Telxius, the project is designed to increase capacity, enhance resilience, and dramatically reduce latency — critical factors for real-time applications and AI-driven services.
The Sol cable doesn’t just expand Google’s global infrastructure — it also solidifies Madrid’s position as a strategic hub for cloud services. Since its debut in 2022, Google Cloud’s Madrid region has become a catalyst for digital transformation, enabling businesses and public institutions to manage data locally while meeting strict EU regulations. With Sol coming online, this region gains an extra layer of speed, reliability, and redundancy that will power the next generation of digital services.
Reduced latency, improved network security, and the ability to handle increasingly complex workloads make this development a game-changer for sectors like finance, healthcare, and logistics. The enhanced connectivity also strengthens Madrid’s competitive edge over other European capitals, attracting fresh investment and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies such as generative AI.
Google’s commitment to Spain was on full display at the Google Cloud Summit Madrid 2025, held in May at IFEMA. The event drew more than 6,000 industry professionals and spotlighted the economic impact of artificial intelligence. A study presented by Esade estimated that generative AI could boost public-sector productivity by 9% over the next decade, translating into an annual economic benefit of €7 billion. Google also announced a $1 million research grant in partnership with CSIC and launched largescale training initiatives aimed at closing the digital skills gap.
With the combination of cutting-edge connectivity, a growing cloud infrastructure, and major investments in AI innovation, Madrid is emerging as one of Europe’s top technology hubs — a gateway for businesses looking to thrive in a highly connected, data-driven economy.
