The Madrid region and Its Support for the Video Game and Audiovisual Sector

The Madrid region is positioning itself as the leading Spanish-speaking hub in the creative and audiovisual industries, acting as a key and crucial point for the sector at the national level.

Specialized Schools and Programs
The region hosts a robust and dynamic video game and audiovisual industry, with a well-established track record in content development and creation. This creative environment not only attracts but also retains high-quality technical and artistic talent. The presence of specialized schools and training programs — such as ECAM, U-Tad, Lightbox Academy, TAI, or Trazos, among others — fosters the continuous growth of qualified professionals. Additionally, AEVI (Spanish Video Game Association) brings together more than 70 companies, including developers, distributors, video game retailers, e-sports leagues, and academic centers. These institutions not only ensure a steady flow of experts in the audiovisual field but also attract Mexican and international talent.

Government Support
The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports carries out initiatives such as grants for the creation and development of video game projects, aimed at supporting creative activities in the early prototype stages (creation, design, programming). In order to stimulate innovative and original proposals, it also organizes, alongside DEV (Spanish Video Game Development), the event Game Jam Madrid Crea, a competition in which participants develop video games inspired by historical, cultural, or tourist elements of the city of Madrid.

Fairs and Events
The Madrid region actively supports the organization of fairs and events related to the video game sector, such as Madrid Games Week (MGW), organized by IFEMA and AEVI. This event has established itself as a global benchmark, with more than 139,000 attendees in its most recent edition. MGW provides an essential platform to discover the latest innovations in software, hardware, accessories, and offerings from the market’s leading brands. Moreover, it enhances visibility and networking opportunities for independent developers. Its significance, with an annual revenue of €1.479 billion, highlights the magnitude of the sector in Spain. More than 16 million people in the country play video games, and the industry directly employs over 9,000 professionals.

In addition to these advantages and its strategic location for potential Mexican investors, the Madrid region offers a solid legal framework that protects foreign investments and serves as a main hub for Spanish-speaking creative activity, making it the perfect location for Mexican investment in the audiovisual and video game industries. Madrid offers growth opportunities with a system that encompasses 45% of the country’s population, highly skilled talent, leading schools, and a cluster of more than 50 organizations. The region represents a strategic gateway to Europe, backed by institutional support through events like Madrid Games Week and a strong connection with Latin America.
