The Madrid Region Concentrated Nearly 70% of Foreign Direct Investment in Spain in 2024, with Over 24 Billion Euros

In 2024, the Madrid Region accounted for 67.1% of all foreign direct investment (FDI) in Spain, totaling 24.705 billion euros—more than two out of every three euros coming from abroad

This was highlighted today by the Regional Minister for the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, during the opening of the “Madrid, Investment Destination” forum, organized by El Confidencial and Invest in Madrid, the regional agency for attracting foreign capital.

García Martín stated that “the Madrid is experiencing an exceptional moment” thanks to the fact that it offers investors “greater economic freedom, full legal certainty, lower taxes, less regulation and bureaucracy; we promote public-private collaboration and guarantee budgetary and institutional stability.”
He emphasized that “Madrid will continue to attract investment, create businesses and jobs, strengthen public services, and thereby improve citizens’ well-being.”

This economic leadership continues, as the region received €4.509 billion in FDI during the first half of this year, representing 53.2% of Spain’s total €8.476 billion. Following Madrid are Catalonia, with €1.189 billion (14.1%), and La Rioja, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, each accounting for less than 5%.

Furthermore, 43% of foreign companies operating in Spain choose Madrid as their base, generating more than €100 billion in sales and 560,000 jobs, nearly a third of the national total.

Investment is mainly concentrated in the information services sector (17.7%), real estate activities (12.2%), financial services (11.5%), food industries (11.1%), and energy supply (7.6%).

The Madrid Region is expected to exceed eight million inhabitants within the next 15 years, and for that reason, the minister declared that “we are in the most investment-driven legislative term in the region’s history, during which we will undertake landmark projects never seen before.”
Among these, he mentioned the Health City, the City of Justice, Madrid Nuevo Norte, the largest expansion and modernization of the Metro network in its history, 40 new senior residences, the Plan Vive, and the Regional Investment Program.
