In addition, it is home to 194 companies in this sector with more than 249 employees, accounting for 44.3% of all such firms nationwide, according to data compiled from the Central Business Register (DIRCE) of the National Statistics Institute (INE).
This industry provides employment for 353,700 registered workers, representing 37.1% of the national total, once again placing the region at the top of the ranking in this area, ahead of Catalonia, which has 224,774 registered employees. Madrid is also the region with the highest demand for digital professionals. Between August and November 2025, 19,889 job vacancies related to the sector were published, accounting for 33.2% of all such offers in Spain, according to the Telefónica Foundation’s Employment Map.
The Madrid Region is also a leader in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some 30.1% of Madrid-based companies with ten or more employees have already incorporated AI solutions into their operations, placing the region nine percentage points above the Spanish average (21.1%) and ahead of regions such as Catalonia (25.6%), the Valencian Community (20.6%) and the Basque Country (20.6%).
Spending on AI systems by companies in the region exceeds €360 million, representing 63% of the national total, while investment in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) security amounts to €2.1 billion, or 47.6% of the national total, with the services sector standing out as the main driving force.
These figures are also reflected in the intensive use of digital resources and the incorporation of specialised talent. Some 22.5% of Madrid-based companies with ten or more employees employ ICT specialists, placing the region well above the national average (16.8%).
More than 2,100 New Startups in 15 Years
Over the past 15 years, more than 2,100 startups have been created in the Madrid Region, generating nearly 21,000 jobs and achieving combined revenues of €3.5 billion, representing 1.2% of the region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
If the analysis is extended to the entire set of technology companies, including those with more than 15 years of activity, Madrid’s ecosystem comprises around 3,500 companies, 56,000 jobs and €5.7 billion in sales. In addition, startups in the region that are less than 15 years old have attracted cumulative investment of €5.9 billion, consolidating Madrid as Spain’s leading technological and innovation hub.
